What is the cheapest way to register your trade mark in multiple countries from Singapore?

international trade mark registration from singapore

There is a cheaper alternative to filing your trade mark individually with the respective offices of the different countries you wish to register in.

Singapore is a member of the Madrid System, a system for the international registration of trade marks that is administered by the World Intellectual Property Organisation. This system allows a trade mark owner in a country which is a signatory to the Madrid protocol to extend protection of its trade mark to any of the member countries by way of an international registration.

By filing for registration in multiple countries through the Madrid protocol, it is possible to save quite a hefty sum of money as the process is systemized and there is no longer a need to involve foreign lawyers.

If you wish to apply for an international registration in this manner, you must be a resident or national of Singapore, or have a real and effective industrial or commercial establishment in Singapore.

You’ll need to have a pre-existing trade mark or you’ll have to apply for or register your mark in Singapore first before proceeding. There’s a small catch in that you can only seek registrations with countries that are signatories to the Madrid Protocol, and you can only apply for the goods or services covered by your Singapore trade mark.

Fortunately, a large number of relevant countries are contracting countries to the Madrid Protocol, and you can always file a separate trade mark application with a country that isn’t if you absolutely have to. There is no limit on the number of countries you can apply for so long as they are all members of the Protocol.

If you’ve already registered a trade mark in Singapore, this international application has to be prepared and submitted through the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
